
Why we put our bathroom heaters through a “torture test”
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, random splashes of water, and temperatures that swing from freezing to boiling in minutes. If a seal slips or a coating peels even a little bit, that heater is toast. It’ll short out or just stop working within a few weeks. We aren’t interested in guessing if our IP65 rating actually works. Instead, we throw our hardware into a controlled chamber and try our hardest to break it.
The reality of steam and stress
Now, an IP65 rating is great—it means the housing keeps out dust and water jets. But a seal that works on day one might not work on day 500. That’s why we use damp-heat aging tests. We cycle the units through extreme humidity and high heat to mimic years of steamy showers. We’re looking for “capillary action”—which is basically a fancy way of saying we’re checking if moisture can sneak its way into the electrical terminals. If water creeps in, you get oxidation. That creates resistance, which leads to overheating, which eventually melts the wiring or trips your breaker. Not a great way to start your morning.
The “breathing” problem
Infrared lamps get hot. Really hot. Every time you flip the switch, the quartz glass expands and contracts. In a humid bathroom, this creates a “breathing” effect that can actually suck moist air right past a weak seal. Our tests show us exactly when and where those seals start to give up. We also keep a close eye on the lens and the internal reflectors. If moisture gets in and causes the reflector to pit or peel, you lose heat. You end up wasting energy inside the fixture instead of feeling that warmth on your feet.
Finding the sweet spot
Here’s the tricky part: if we make the seal too tight to keep the water out, we trap the heat inside. If we aren’t careful with the internal airflow, the electronics will basically cook themselves in their own juices. It’s a balancing act. We have to make sure the unit is airtight enough to survive a shower, but breathable enough that the driver doesn’t burn out.
