
Why Your IP65 Infrared Heaters Keep Failing (And How to Fix It)
Getting an IP65 waterproof rating is easy when the heater is sitting cold on a shelf. The real nightmare starts the moment you flip the switch. Here is the problem: in infrared systems, the spot where the lead wire meets the heating element is basically a target for failure. As the heater glows, heat doesn’t just stay put—it crawls right up the wire. If that seal isn’t perfect, that heat eats away at the insulation from the inside out.
The problem with “standard” seals
Most generic heaters just use a bit of silicone or some basic glue. It looks fine at first. But once you start cycling the heat, those materials bake. They get brittle. They crack. And that’s when things get messy. Moisture sneaks into those tiny cracks. The next time the unit kicks on, that water flashes into steam instantly. It creates a conductive path, sparks fly, andboom—you’ve got a short circuit. It happens fast, and it’s a pain to fix.
How we actually stop the leak
We decided to stop relying on glue. Instead, we use a multi-stage process. We combine high-temp ceramic potting with specialized fluoropolymer sleeves. Think of it as a heavy-duty thermal wall. It stops the “wicking” effect, which is just a fancy way of saying it keeps the heat from traveling down the copper wire and melting the outer jacket. We’ve tested these seals to handle the constant stress of heating up and cooling down thousands of times. They stay flexible. They stay tight. The IP65 rating actually lasts.
A couple of tips for installation
Since these seals are so robust, the lead wires are a bit stiffer than what you might be used to. Don’t force them. If you bend the wire at a sharp angle right near the heater head, you’re putting a ton of stress on that internal seal. Just give the wire a nice, generous loop. It’s safer that way. Also, make sure your enclosure has some breathing room. Even with a bulletproof seal, if you trap all that heat around the cable exit, the jacket is going to age way faster than it should. Give it some air.
