
Why Your Bathroom Heater Keeps Shorting Out (And How to Fix It)
Bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam one minute and intense, localized heat the next. If you’ve ever had an infrared wall heater die on you, the culprit is usually the same: the spot where the electrical wire meets the heating element. It’s the “danger zone.” Here is the problem. Quartz tubes and copper wires don’t react to heat the same way. One expands, the other doesn’t. This creates a tiny gap. It’s small, but it’s enough to let moisture creep in and heat leak out. Before you know it, the insulation just gives up.
The slow burn
Most cheap heaters try to fix this with basic glue or some loose rubber gaskets. It works for a while. But after a few dozen heat cycles, those materials get brittle. They crack. Once that seal is gone, the heat starts eating the wire insulation. It turns into carbon. Then, pop—you’ve got a short circuit. We see this all the time with units that cut corners on the build.
Doing it the right way
We do things differently. Instead of cheap glue, we use high-temp glass-to-metal seals or specialized ceramic potting. Think of it as a permanent lock. It keeps the steam out and traps the heat where it belongs. By creating this kind of seal, we move the stress away from the electrical connection. The wire isn’t taking a beating every time you turn the heater on. It just stays cool and does its job.
One quick warning
There is a trade-off, though. Because these seals are so solid, the wire is a bit stiffer. You can’t just bend these wires sharply during installation. If you kink the wire too close to the seal, you might crack the ceramic. Just make sure your team gives the wire a bit of breathing room—a gentle curve rather than a sharp fold. It’s a simple shift in how things are built, but it’s the difference between a heater that lasts for years and one that shorts out after six months of steamy showers.
